Phillips Steel Company was founded in1915 in Long Beach, California by Paul Phillips, the grandfather of current company president, Daryl Phillips, at the corner of Ocean and American Avenues. There are century old documents on display in the company office showing how Grandpa Paul Phillips, born in Russia, immigrated to the United States through Texas in 1903, eventually ending up in Southern California. Grandpa Phillips started what was essentially Long Beach's first recycling center, turning scrap metal, paper and rags into new and usable products.

In 1930 the company moved from downtown to its current location, near the corner of Anaheim Street and Harbor Avenue. Under the management of Ted Phillips, Paul's son and Daryl's father, the business continued to grow and diversify in order to better meet the needs of its customers. Today Phillips Steel has become a full service metal company.
The company is currently run by President Daryl Phillips, who began work at the company under his father. Joining him in the day-to-day sales and operations are fourth generation family members, Greg and Todd Phillips, his two nephews. Daryl's wife Sandy also joins him in the business handling things in the Credit Department. Sara Phillips, fourth generation, Sales, joined the company in 2005. Phillips Steel Company is truly a family affair.
